Dreams Over Apples - Bleach

Rukia and the Rukongai children. For the Bleach themes (8: the other side) at [info]20themes.

Who knows, we might be here just because we've been misplaced, some of the children would say from time to time, timidly, wistfully. Someone kidnapped a rich family's baby a long time ago, and one day the family will come here and -

The loudness of the following yell of pain varied, depending on how much pressure Rukia applied when pinching their cheeks. She then explained in a monotonous voice how fairy tales were written for the privileged; they could afford to listen to stories, constantly warm and living inside comfortable houses as they were. We'd do better to discuss ways to get food, she said. Now shoo, it's almost dinnertime.

Her eyebrows lowered as she stood on the doorway, watching the children scamper off. She did not, of course, have to mention that many fairy tales had their sad endings cut off or tailored. The children should have already known that.

Nice :) Even thought it's sad in some way :/ It's from the times before she became Shinigami, isn't it?

Thank you :) Yes, it is. I wrote a drabble on almost the same subject some time ago and wanted to explore it again.

Ah, the punch at the end about tailored/sad endings for fairy tales was very, very effective. (Ironically, I was discussing with someone in my thread convos the bowdlerization of fairy tales for Disney movies--Cinderella, the Little Mermaid, etc. But I digress. XD)

Rukia ♥ I like how the children do occasionally wish for something more, and how she tells them to focus on getting food. And when you say "the children should have already known that," it's like a two-layered denial--the children are trying to pretend that they don't actually come from Rukongai by spinning fairy tales, and trying to pretend the fairy tales don't really have the sad endings. I thought that was really cool. :)

the bowdlerization of fairy tales for Disney movies

To make the stories more family-friendly (and easier to sell), no doubt.

The Rukongai kids would be a tough bunch, I think, the more so when they get older. Not that they'll get immune or dehumanized or anything, just harder. Like Rukia ;)

Thank you!

agree, I love the last line-- poignant glimpse into Rukongai life and the absence of childhood.

I wonder if Rukia ever thinks much about what she has or has not missed during her childhood.
Thanks for commenting :)
