Genichirou had his first official kendo match against his brother when he was six. He lost, and was afterward seen trailing after Genesuke, demanding a rematch.

The older boy appeared more amused than annoyed. "Don't you think you should spend your time practicing instead of following me around?" he said. "Unless you're planning to lose again next time."

Genichirou took the words to heart. He did lose the next match, but barely. Genesuke grinned at him as they left the dojo. "Nice try. Keep it up, and you might actually win someday." Genichirou bristled, and Genesuke laughed. "Tell you what - you're a hard, diligent worker, and some people are going to appreciate that and say so. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them."

Years later, Genichirou found himself hoping - vaguely - that the Monthly Pro Tennis was sold in the vicinity of the university Genesuke was attending.
